Shipping container flooring is a crucial component of any container. It provides a strong, stable and sturdy base that can securely handle the weight of cargo and spread that weight evenly to maintain the structural integrity of the container. A well-maintained floor shields the goods inside the container from external impacts, moisture and pests.

If the container is used to transport or store goods, the container floor panels need to protect against pests and moisture while being strong enough to carry the load safely without warping or breaking. They also need to withstand the additional weight of loading and unloading equipment, such as forklifts.

If the container is being used as a living or workspace, flooring needs to be safe, solid and durable enough to withstand constant wear and tear.

Why Would You Replace Container Floor Panels

Inevitably, container flooring succumbs to damage from use.

New or replacement container floor panels may be needed if your container:

  • doesn't have a suitable flooring for purpose
  • the current flooring is damaged or warped through age, usage and environmental conditions
  • additional load bearing is needed – additional panels can also be used to reinforce specific areas for heavier cargo or equipment.

Well-maintained, fit-for-purpose container flooring plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient transport of cargo, reducing the risk of damage during transit. Replacement is essential if your flooring has become damaged.

What Is Shipping Container Flooring Made From?

Most container floors are wooden, with panels having a standard thickness of 28mm.

The most common type of shipping container floor is plywood. Standard plywood container floor panels are made from thin layers of wood veneer bonded together with adhesives. Their uniform structure offers consistent strength and stability, making them resistant to warping and decay.

Additionally, panels are treated to further resist warping from moisture and humidity and to deter fungus and insects.

Bamboo floor panels are a sustainable and eco-friendly option for shipping container flooring. Renowned for its rapid growth and renewability, bamboo has an impressive strength-to-weight ratio and natural resistance to moisture and pests. It's also considered to have a more attractive appearance for containers used as living space.

How Are Container Floors Installed?

Container floor panels are installed by screwing them securely to the cross members (steel beams) that run along the bottom of the container. Bevelled edges make installation easier and create a snug fit.

Items, such as shelving brackets can also be screwed securely into the flooring.
